GregSpeaking1The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have created businesses they love around their purpose.

Greg Gardner is a musician, composer, father/husband, and works at the Sales Performance Office at IBM as a Sr. Sales Performance Coach.  He loves helping salespeople perform better thus leading a better life.  He also believes in helping IBM create a Smarter Planet.  Whether it be music, sales, martial arts, technology, parenting… he is a lifelong student of how people and organizations perform.

Here’s some of what we covered in the interview:

  • What Greg did when he was “losing altitude” in enterprise sales
  • How Greg turned quitting during the recession into the best thing he ever did
  • Greg shares about his ideas on ‘selling authentic”
  • How Greg chose between getting a job or starting a business of his own
  • How drawing a picture changed Greg’s life
  • Why he pinches himself every morning when he wakes up to make sure it’s not a dream
  • How Greg has been able to choose where and when he wants to travel
  • Greg shares his mindset of “how you’re ultimately working for yourself” has helped
  • Greg realized that being authentic doesn’t always mean you ‘have to’ own a business
  • How alignment with the people you work with is key to personal and professional growth
  • The three options everyone has in every situation: accept it, change it or get out
  • What it takes to trust your instincts
  • Why getting help from others is so important
  • Why authenticity leads to attracting the kind of people you want to work with
  • Why this picture was important:

Chip Conley is the founder & CEO of Joie de Vivre, the largest boutique hotel group in California. He’s also the bestselling author of “Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo From Maslow”.  His latest book, just released, is titled Emotional Equations.

One of the many things that I admire about Chip Conley is how he created a corporate culture of success at Joie de Vivre by focusing on his employees, and helping them find their own meaning at work. Chip believes that the success of a company depends highly on the emotional well being of the employees.

A Quick Video Introduction

And In The Full Audio Interview…

…which you can listen to or download below, here’s some points we covered:

  • sometimes the skills you learn during the hardest times in life are there to serve you later
  • the “trappings” of success can be just that – a trap
  • why labeling your emotions is so powerful
  • anxiety = uncertainty x powerlessness (and his great “anxiety balance sheet” technique)
  • if you created a pie chart of your self-esteem and confidence, how much would come from non-work areas of your life?
  • does this question scare you, like it did Chip: “do you know what it feels like to just sit still for ten minutes doing nothing?”
  • are you using work as a drug?  running from your family, numbing yourself to life, or searching for approval?
  • if you’re a depressed CEO, how do you inspire your employees while remaining authentic and not fake?

Double Double, a guide from Cameron Herald, "Back Pocket COO"The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have created businesses they love around their purpose.

Everyone has a purpose (or “calling”), and there are always ways to turn your purpose, any purpose, into a business you love. It’s easier to live your purpose daily when you do it for work!

Cameron Herold is one of the country’s most innovative business leaders and was a leading force behind one of the most successful new business ventures of the last decade, 1-800-GOT-JUNK?

He was Chief Operating Officer for nearly seven years and his innovative business leadership helped enable the company to build a presence in 46 states, 9 provinces, and 4 countries.   During his tenure, numerous MBA programs studied the company, including the prestigious program at Harvard.  He helped grow the company from $2 million to over $100 million in revenue!

One of the many things that I admire about Cameron is that he knows building a successful brand and hyper-growth business isn’t about personality or luck. It’s about having the right systems. Cameron can give you the framework and proven solutions that will accelerate your revenue, build your profitability, and help you avoid costly problems. It really IS like having a COO right in your back pocket.

Cameron’s Unique Genius is: “to lead and energize people by using quick, intuitive alternatives to build plans that reverse engineer their dreams.” ~ AWESOME!

Here’s some of what we covered in the interview:

  • how writing 20 minutes a day and making lists led him to the work he loves, his dream business
  • how clearly & specifically Cameron describes his ideal clients (awesome!)
  • a great story about how he got over being chicken and fired someone he’d needed to fire for six months (ps – his mentor gave him the advice that ‘you’ve been stealing his life from him by not firing him’)
  • why his “painted picture” visioning is so important for clients, and why he started it after learning how olympic athletes used visualizing
  • his three key areas of vision, people, and focus

Cameron and I also talk about his last chapter called “Letters To Myself”…which includes all kinds of advice to his ‘past selves’!  That section of the interview and in the book you do not want to miss.

Everyone has a purpose (or “calling”), and there are always ways to turn your purpose, any purpose, into a business you love. It’s easier to live your purpose daily when you do it for work!

Today I’m interviewing Jennifer Lee, the author of  The Right-Brain Business Plan.  She helps people really get clear about what they want in their life and their business, AND she makes what people really want happen!  Jennifer is a certified coach, writer, artist, yogini, and the founder of Artizen Coaching.  Before pursuing her own passions full-time, she spent time in the corporate world, consulting for ten years for companies such as Gap Inc., Accenture, Sony, and HP, helping leaders and organizations manage change.

Now she is on a mission to empower people to awaken their innate creativity and make a living doing what they love (sounds familiar, doesn’t it?!).  I was honored to talk with one of my fellow empower-ers on how she helps people.

In the interview, Jennifer shares about:

  • how she fell in love with life coaching in 2003
  • how she reached her limit and finally made the leap out of the corporate world in 2006
  • how she integrated her art and creative side to become a source of revenue
  • how what “services” you in the corporate world might “sabotage” your passions
  • the pitfall of “compare and despair” when creating your business
  • how to engage in “income and expenses” in a fun and artistic way
  • how making a visual business plan can help you perform more effectively
  • a few easy ways to bring more creativity into your life

And… she also shares the advice she would have given herself back in 2003 ~ valuable!

Everyone has a purpose (or “calling”), and there are always ways to turn your purpose, any purpose, into a business you love. It’s easier to live your purpose daily when you do it for work!

Today I’m interviewing Johnny B. Truant, a snarky internet entrepreneur with the fun catchphrase of “The Internet Made Awesome”!

Here’s why I wanted to share Johnny with you.  He runs a different kind of internet and coaching business.

What he does doesn’t make sense.  He doesn’t do internet marketing correctly at all, and his search engine stats are terrible. He doesn’t write about the things that make him money. He doesn’t have a big email list, and he doesn’t even contact the list he does have often enough, or in the right way. He has never spent a dime on advertising. He is known to swear too much and never, ever acts “professional.”

And in nine months, Johnny went from literally having never made a cent online to making five figures a month.

Here’s some of what we covered in the interview:

  • why the biggest sin online is to be boring
  • why it’s so hard to get johnny to work after 6pm
  • why when he has a “slow business period” that surprises him, he relaxes instead of working harder
  • why some people online have those “big long sales pages” that scream ‘buy buy buy’…and why he believes it’s not the best way to make money
  • how johnny made his first $1 and how he made his $3000
  • why it’s easier to make money “being yourself”
  • the value of being scared outta his mind

And if that’s not enough, we’ll also talk about why Johnny’s doing “The Badass Project” about physically disadvantaged people who have accomplished ridiculously amazing things (like climbing K2 without legs??!)

In 2004, I got honest with myself that my marriage had failed.  Ouch.  Yet as painful as it was, it led me to a much happier, healthier relationship.

And I remember in 2007, working as an Entrepreneur-In-Residence at a venture capital firm in Palo Alto, when I first got really honest with myself: I admitted that I didn’t want to start a business that didn’t feel meaningful, no matter how sexy it was.  I admitted to myself that I didn’t want to start a company which required me to raise money.  I admitted that I didn’t want to do software anymore,  that titles and prestige just weren’t important compared to day-to-day fulfillment.

Raw self-honesty isn’t always comfortable, but it’s necessary if you want to live a full life and have a full bank account.

Being honest with myself that way changed my life forever, leading me to start PebbleStorm and create the Unique Genius work (how to make as much money as you want, doing what you want).

I originally recorded this video of the beautiful Brenda Owens to share with my Unique Genius Superhero Program clients, but this is a message everyone – including me! – should be reminded of…be honest with yourself!

YouTube Preview Image

If you missed it, I wrote a blog post in January called “How I Lie To Myself“.

More About Brenda Owens

Brenda’s one of five 1-1 mentoring clients in my “All-in” PebbleStorm Mastermind.  Here’s a little bit about her from her site, and where her inspiration comes from to help others…

“As an only child, I lost my mother when I was 27, I lost my father when I was 30, and then my marriage ended a couple of months later.  After that, I bought into the myth that unconditional love was no longer available to me, as I had no blood relatives or even a husband…

Today, I rarely feel lonely and live my life from the inside out.  I love and trust myself and am comfortable and confident in my own skin.  In my heart I know and believe if I could make such a shift, to live life from the ‘inside out’ that anyone can.  It really comes down to understanding that it’s our thoughts and choices that create our reality.  I assist people in feeling happy, loved, inspired and serene.  My purpose and passion is to motivate myself and others to take the next step to Live an Inspired Life and enjoy happy success.

She’s a wonderful example of someone who’s honest and authentic both with herself and others.

You can find out more about Brenda and her story at www.BrendaOwens.com, and if you have a pet, check out the cute “Pet Blessings” name tags at www.PacificPetShop.com!

Brenda’s starting a new coaching practice, so if she ‘speaks’ to you in the video or in her story on www.BrendaOwens.com, reach out to her to say hi or find out about her coaching at Contact Brenda Owens.  She lives in Carlsbad, CA, so if you know anyone in that area who should meet her, please forward this on.

If You Were Totally Honest With Yourself, How Would That Change Your Work Or Life?

How are you settling in your work?  What would your life look like if you didn’t give up on what you really want out of work?  If you could be successful at anything, and started taking steps towards it?

I have never met someone who didn’t have a special gift or superpower that they could activate if they chose to.

How do you make excuses for not committing to finding your gifts / making more money / having more fun in life & at work / inspiring more people / making a bigger difference?

The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have figured out how to make money through their purpose & passions to create fulfillment and freedom.

Susan Kennedy aka SARK, is an artist who’s had a fascinating and tumultuous journey to figure out how to share her gifts with the world.  You’ll immediately recognize her trademark colorful, handwritten style after the first time you see it!  Think my sketches, on steroids times a bajillion 🙂

SARK also just published a new book, her 16th, titled “Glad No Matter What: Transforming Losses & Change Into Gifts & Opportunity“.  It’s awesome.  Have you ever seen a handwritten, published book?  That’s SARK’s style.  And while she’s crazily creative, she’s found an excellent groove in mixing her creative right brain stuff with left brain processes.

Rather than trying to explain more why she’s so awesome, just glance through the list of bullet points of stuff we covered in the interview… (for example, how can someone “opt out” of the money system and live on barter and trade for 10 years??)…pretty fascinating!

  • Why she calls herself a “human experiment”
  • Why you shouldn’t avoid feelings like loneliness or anger (and how to deal with them)
  • Why SARK’s work is important to Unique Genius
  • How being molested as a young girl planted the seeds of her Unique Genius, leading her to an early mentor
  • How – at 10 years old – she save the life of her childhood mentor with small gifts, and realized “I’m supposed to be a beacon of hope”
  • How SARK opted out of the “money system” to live on barter & trade for 10 years
  • Great advice from her grandfather: “do everything you can think of doing now, so you know what you don’t want to do the rest of your life” (SARK went on to have 250 jobs between ages 14 and 26!)
  • How, at 35, SARK decided it was time to share all her art and gifts with the world and first turned her art into money
  • Why SARK’s first $2.5 million business wasn’t fulfilling or profitable
  • SARK’s best three tips staying uber-creative
  • About SARK’s “Micro movement wheel of delight” (I love how she reframes even baby steps into fun!)
  • SARK’s Free Inspiration Phone-line (12,000 people call it every month): 415-546-3742

Here’s another inspirational and empowered woman who made her challenges in the past a tool for a better future…

I love Amy Applebaum!  She is the force behind Amy Applebaum Inc. and “The Release Your Inner Millionairess” program designed to create life changing breakthroughs in her clients, mostly early stage women entrepreneurs.

Amy’s helped hundreds of thousands of female entrepreneurs across the globe and has been on ABC News, CNN, TLC, LX New York and Martha Stewart.

In 2009, Amy made a big evolution in her business to achieve Unique Genius Superhero status, and in the interview we talk about that change as well as other big work transitions over the past 15+ years that have led her here.

A great quote from this interview: “It’s ok to be afraid, just do it anyway”.

We covered…

  • How Amy turned getting fired into freedom
  • How Amy started her first company placing vending machines, and how her first disaster led her to changing her approach and making the business successful
  • How Amy went from 1-1 life coaching to a business expert helping entrepreneurs all over the world
  • How to make the most of your advisors & team
  • Why having fun in work is so important & relevant

The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have discovered their purpose and turned it into a successful business.

Let me just say, this interview was awesome.  Even a client of mine said “the Brian Johnson interview was stupid good. I really liked the way he lives his life and enjoyed the interaction between the two of you. There is much in common.  Thanks for making the time for this. Best, Eliot.” And thanks Eliot for suggesting I interview him!

By the way, even if you don’t listen to the interview, take this bit of advice to heart: when Brian was 24 and “a train wreck” (his words), all he could do was follow his “single little bit of bliss” (wanting to to coach little league baseball).  That eventually led to the idea, growth and $13 million sale of his first company.

So what is your little bit of bliss, however small, that you’re not following because it’s not “practical”?

A little about Brian:

Brian lived for a year in Bali as part of figuring out what he wanted to do and coming up with PhilosophersNotes.com. Brian, like myself, comes from a technology-entrepreneurship background, but left it behind to start a Unique Genius business.

In his first venture, as a 24-year-old law-school-dropout-turned-CEO, Brian led the creation of eteamz – the world’s largest amateur sports site that was sold for over $13 million of stock and cash to The Active Network, Inc. in 2000 (and it still profitably serves more than 3 million team players in 120 countries around the world).  So the guy knows some stuff 🙂

Also, Brian will be a guest expert trainer in my upcoming Discover Your Unique Genius program.  When you listen to the interview, you’ll understand why I invited him to participate.

Things we discussed:

  • How Brian dropped out of law school at age 24, terrified & “a train wreck”… and then by following his “single little bit of bliss” (wanting to to coach little league baseball) led to the idea, growth and $13 million sale of his first company.
  • Why Brian feels that raising money from investors – which he’s done twice, almost $10 million worth – is overrated (and why I agree!)
  • Why taking a 10-day silent vipassana meditation course, and starting to meditate, was one of the most significant things Brian’s ever done for himself (although it almost drove him crazy).
  • Brian’s two main sources of stress, and how he manages them.
  • What kind of environment and activities lead to the idea and vision of PhilosophersNotes.com
  • What led Brian to realize that “he’s just not that into business” and what he REALLY cares about.

And so…

Look, if you’re going to do a video interview, it’s pretty hard to beat doing one at the top of Macchu Picchu.  Jodi Nelson started an amazing Unique Genius business called “Play It Forward Adventures“, integrating adventure travel with service work. She’s truly mashing her passions!

We talk about what she was doing before she started it, how she began, where the ideas came from, how her coach made a big difference, and what’s going on this year for her (her 4th year)…

The trip was awesome – we spent:

  • A couple of days in Lima & Cusco,
  • About three days volunteering in a local village school (building tables and chairs, planting trees, playing with kids),
  • Three days trekking in the Andes, and
  • A day in Machu Picchu.

The people on the trip were fantastic!  It was just awesome all around 🙂

The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have created businesses they love around their purpose. They’ve found ways to combine enjoyment, money and meaning in their work.

I met Yanik Silver about two years ago, through Tim Ferriss, and immediately hit it off with him. Yanik’s purpose is to help himself and others “make more money, have more fun, give more back”.

Yanik single-handedly also catalyzed the shift of PebbleStorm from a blog into a business, by hosting me in a webinar with his audience back in March 2009 (Post about it: “Thanks for making the world more of a place I want to live“).

So – more about Yanik: he’s a serial internet entrepreneur – although he still considers himself a ‘techno dunce’. Starting from his one-bedroom apartment and with just a few hundred dollars, Yanik has built multiple 7-figure businesses.

Yanik most recently founded “Maverick Business Adventures”, which combines his love of business, adventure and awesome enterpreneurs.

Currently, Yanik’s most important missions are to help 1,000,000 young entrepreneurs (ages 13-23) to start or grow their own businesses by 2020 and to get his 2½ year old daughter, Zoe, potty trained.

Here are some of the topics we covered…

  • How he started his first business part-time (while working in medical sales), and turned it into a $8,000-$10,000 per month business before jumping ship to work full time on it
  • The 2×2 matrix he uses to plan moving into new markets or building new products
  • How Yanik’s money motivation shifted with success (away from Rolex watches and cars)
  • The two things that REALLY matter in life
  • How he manages his time with multiple businesses and a family

And more, of course! This interview was longer than usual, because we had such a good time and covered so many interesting areas 🙂

I’ve been doing a whole series of Unique Genius Superhero Interviews (including some new ones coming in the next several weeks of people like Yanik Silver, George Kao, Clay Collins & Amy Applebaum), but now it was my turn to be interviewed, this time by Ali Berlin.

Ali Berlin (a life coach in San Francisco with a Saturday morning radio show) interviewed me recently about topics like:

  • Why I started PebbleStorm
  • Where the inspiration came from
  • How and why I broke away from the corporate world
  • the inspiration for Unique Genius,
  • tips and advice on finding your own Unique Genius (even if you have a full-time job and family and have little free time and energy)

The interview is a great first introduction to my own story and what PebbleStorm and Unique Genius is all about…including some practical tips 🙂

The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have created businesses they love around their purpose. They’ve found ways to combine enjoyment, money and meaning in their work!

If you think all the productivity & life direction advice sounds the same out there (except for mine, of course), meet Jonathan Mead, founder of Illuminated Mind & Body (or just “Illuminated Mind”).

Jon’s a really interesting guy who has fun turning “success/life advice” on its head with attention-grabbing blog posts such as “If It’s A Good Idea, Don’t Do It“, “The Best Way To Solve A Problem: Give Up“, and “The Lie Of The Four Hour Workweek“.

Jon’s a precocious 24-year old entrepreneur, author, blogger, martial artist, general seeker adventure and husband who bailed on his 9-5 job in 2009 once he could support himself on his Illuminated Mind business. It’s not yet making him rich – it’s under six figures (for now) – but he supports himself on it and he’s living and working his purpose. And the money will keep coming & growing as he keeps this up.  He’s “got it”.

Jonathan started simply – as a part-time blogger  – and his unique take on topics and no-nonsense writing style…if you’re turned off by the terms ‘ass-kicking’ & ‘kicking ass’, stay away 🙂

Here are some of the topics we covered…

  • How Jon juggled creating Illuminated Mind while working full time and being married
  • What Jon sacrificed to start and grow Illuminated Mind
  • How he got to making about $4k per month working part time (before he quit his job)
  • Two methods Jon uses to be hyper-productive
  • The REAL value of blogging (it’s not all about building an audience)
  • How to make success or a goal “inevitable”
  • An unforeseen challenges of being his own boss
  • And more, of course!

The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have created businesses they love around their purpose.

Everyone has a purpose (or “calling”), and there are always ways to turn your purpose, any purpose, into a business you love. It’s easier to live your purpose daily when you do it for work!

Chip Conley is the founder & CEO of Joie de Vivre, the largest boutique hotel group in California. He’s also the bestselling author of “Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo From Maslow”.

Chip’s found his calling twice in his life, and I was fascinated to find out if there were patterns between the two.

At 26, Chip left a highly successful career in commercial real estate to become a rebellious boutique hotel entrepreneur, and create a successful business through inspired employees.  In the past few years, Chip’s recent calling to teach companies & people how to become more successful is manifesting through his books and a PeakOrganizations.com seminars business.

One of the many things that I admire about Chip Conley is how he created a corporate culture of success at Joie de Vivre by focusing on his employees, and helping them find their own meaning at work. Chip believes that the success of a company depends highly on the emotional well being of the employees. Enjoyment at work creates happier employees, who create happier customers which leads to higher revenue growth & lower service costs!

Here’s some of what we covered in the interview:

  • The differences between a job, career & calling
  • How he’s found TWO callings in his life
  • How, before Chip was famous, he convinced Richard Branson to write a foreword to one of his books
  • How to create a corporate culture of recognition that juices employee morale & motivation
  • And more!

Chip also gives us a couple of examples of the “Emotional Equations” that are the basis of an upcoming book.

The Unique Genius Superheroes Interview Series is about ordinary people who have created businesses they love around their purpose. I recently had the privilege of interviewing Marc Allen, an internationally renowned author and president and publisher of the multi-million dollar company New World Library.

I wanted to interview Marc for two reasons:

1) Marc Allen and I think almost exactly alike! In many ways his writings follow similar principles to PebbleStorm, including (“Visionary Business,” “The Millionaire Course,” and “The Type-Z Guide to Success: A Lazy Person’s Manifesto to Wealth and Fulfillment.”)

2) Marc loves writing books that have an impact in the world and change peoples lives, and part of his work includes guidance on helping people find their purpose.

While much of the interview delves into both how he found his purpose and it led him to financial independence, we covered a lot of related ground, including:

  • What happened on the morning of his 30th bday that shifted the direction of his life 180 degrees.
  • How his “Ideal Scene” practice works (it was his single most important tool he used to change his core beliefs around life, work and money).
  • How he avoided bankruptcy at 35 and turned his finances around.
  • Why, in creating and building his multi-million dollar company, he never worked at it more than 30 hours per week.
  • His take on the three things a business needs to succeed.
  • Why he shares 50% of his profits with employees (I’m going to have to do a follow up CEOFlow interview with him!)
  • How being generous is the smart way to be selfish 🙂
