I’m (Re)Learning How To Rest

November 10th, 2010

Know those people who are busy all the time?  Well, your brain, like your body, needs time to recuperate, re-energize and get stronger.  If you don’t get enough rest, you won’t physically or mentally ‘heal’ as much as you could.

Here’s a quick (1 minute) video about it, just after I’d gotten out of bed, and I’m still feeling a little silly 🙂

Why Rest?

After putting a LOT of energy into my Unique Genius work the past six months (mostly on launching the Unique Genius Superhero Program and the “Your Call To Adventure 3-Day Retreat“), I’m dialing it down for three months (November, December, January).  I’m avoiding new projects to focus on my current programs and clients.

I don’t have a challenge in taking action – I have more of a challenge to rest enough (especially sleeping, napping, meditating, being positively lazy).  And yes, it is a challenge.  Without enough rest, I don’t feel as sharp, inspired, energized or creative as I know I can be.

I can get away with a few night or weeks of high-output work, but it always catches up to me.  And the longer I wait to recuperate and rest, the longer it takes… hence the “take it easier for three months” goal now.

I actually don’t think this will be easy for me…but I’ll give it my best shot!

It’ll help that I’m going to the awesome Optimum Health Institute next week for a week.

Have Advice For Me? What Are Your Favorite Ways To Rest?

I’d love some suggestions and ideas.

One that really works for me: Yoga Nidra guided meditations from Robin Carnes.  I can actually take naps with these…and I have a really tough time napping.

I totally understand Aaron! I am learning how to take a day off – I had my first day off since May this past weekend where I did not work at all. I’m in the same boat, learning when to shut the busy mind off for the day and not feel guilty about it – re-learning about Rest and Recharging. 🙂

    We can do it!

You ROCK Aaron. Whatever it takes that works for you to deliver your genius to us, I’m all on board for. ROCK on!

And yes, rest is such a beautiful thing and definitely something I’m needing to get more of and learn how to get more of. I, too, am that ‘go go go’ girl.

Sending love and kudos to you for a great and fun video. Love your authenticity,

    Lynn

Good for you Aaron! I can totally relate and think that I am actually doing the same thing with Reflect. I actually spent a week in Hawaii, just playing in the ocean, hiking, reading, doing yoga, and that really helped me relax. In fact, it made me realize that I want to continue on in that direction for a while because I felt at peace. I think anything that you can do in nature will be relaxing and invigorating! I am excited for you and look forward to the feelings you feel throughout this journey:-)!

Taking time to yourself, laughing everyday and spenindg time around playful people is sure to help you relax into your true restful self. Make sure to get plenty of rest and eat well too! I also hear that physical affection everyday is said to increase happiness! Best of luck to you Aaron in your search for peace.. and thanks for your authentic posts. You are an inspiration!

I rest each year with a juice fast = to my age..works like a charm and ride the indoor bike while working on the laptop. Now that is relaxing and gets 2 things done at once.

Happiness is in enjoying what you do and Aaron you seem to be enjoying this stage of your life as well.

PS I am working with a guy you advised a few years ago in his company and he speaks very highly of your energy and focus in life too.

    Cheers,
    Clint

There’s so much about our world that drives us to destructive behavior and most of us don’t even realize it’s happening. I’m glad you had this awakening (no pun intended).

I hope the next few months are very rejuvenating for you. Moreover,I hope it results in lasting positive change; a new way of life which proves to be more balanced and meaningful.

Hey Aaron, (We met through Max)
You are spot on with your insights so thank you. Funny you should post this as I happen to be posting this from an Island in Malaysia where I’m taking four days to myself after conducting a retreat and speaking in Kuala Lumpur. In my “inaction” today I birthed an incredible project for 2011 that fills me up. So you are right… the more we slow down, the more we are rewarded with insights, connectedness and creativity. Happy resting!

One of my favorites is to take a blanket out to the yard, and lie down on the ground and fall asleep outside with the trees blowing and the birds chirpin. I’m going for simplicity.

Can’t wait to see the new ideas that spring from your rested state! -Sandra 🙂

@Sandra Loren, I love this idea!! Today in Santa Monica the wind is BLOWING like crazy (windows-rattling strength), so I’ll wait a bit to try it 🙂
